BIOPRINTING: A ONE-OF-A-KIND MACHINE ON THE CENTRALE NANTES CAMPUS

With an already strong reputation in additive manufacturing, Centrale Nantes took possession of a one-of-a-kind bioprinting machine on 10th May 2016, marking a new phase in the school’s history.

Centrale Nantes is one of the higher education establishments blazing a trail in bioprinting, a field in which the school is working closely with Nantes University Hospital and Inserm. Bioprinting uses 3D printing technologies to print living tissue.

The one-of-a-kind machine has just arrived on campus. What makes it unique is that it was designed directly at Centrale Nantes, no such machine being available on the market. Manufactured offsite by a sub-contractor, the three-axis machine was delivered to the school premises on 10th May and installed in a specially equipped cleanroom. The next steps will be to programme the machine and attach the syringes which allow cells to be dispensed.
A little while to wait yet before the first tests!

Initially, some time will be devoted to getting to know the machine and learning how to dispense cells. Whilst the ultimate objective is to manufacture organs, one of the aims in the nearer future is to manufacture organ parts, for medicine testing for example. Work will be also be carried out on transplant biocompatibility.
