Conference: Will there be enough materials for energy transition?

In order to combat global warming, energy transition has to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are looking here at two levers of this transition: the substitution of fossil fuels by low-carbon energies (foremost among which are renewable energies such as wind and solar power) and the electrification of transport.
Whatever the scenarios envisaged for energy transition, it will require a large number of materials, particularly metals such as copper, lithium and rare earths.

Three questions will be asked during this conference chaired by Bertrand Huneau:

• Where do materials come from and how much do we produce?
• What quantity of materials do we need for energy transition?
• What contribution can recycling make to the production of materials?

The conference will conclude by underlining that energy transition can only be achieved if we also think about our needs and uses, in other words as part of a wider ecological and societal transition.
