Conference: The social dimension of ecological transition

As early as 2007 and following the Fukushima accident in 2011, the European Union has embarked on a path of transition towards renewable energy sources and ever more ambitious energy efficiency targets. But have the general public and civil society been sufficiently involved in the transition? Why are we now witnessing all these protest movements against political decisions in the environmental field? Are they justified?
The conference explores the challenges for transition and potential solutions for reconciliation between environmental and social bodies are discussed. Research on the planning and integration of renewables, on the fight against fuel poverty, and into bioclimatic building design is presented.
About the Speaker
Pietro Florio is a post-doctoral researcher at the Solar Energy and Building Physics Lab at EPFL. He has been working for several years on the social acceptance and visual impact of building integrated solar modules. His areas of expertise include building energy modeling and monitoring, for which he is now carrying on an analysis of the NEST SolAce unit at EMPA; Energy Poverty, for which he is part of the COST Engager Action and had an active role in research and development both in Italy and France; Parametric Architecture, for which he collaborates in a workgroup within the COST RESTORE community; Solar Energy and Urban Planning, for which he has been expert and discussion leader in several IEA Tasks.
