Abstract: Wave energy converters have evolved significantly since the first prototypes in the 1970s. These were rigid and composed of articulated sections; whereas today’s wave power systems are now fully flexible like the S3 developed by SBM Offshore. This system is composed of a closed elastic tube filled with water whose radial deformations are directly converted into electricity through the use of electro-active polymer rings. The objective of this thesis is to develop a numerical model that is able to predict the behaviour of the deformable wave power system in any type of marine environment.

From experiments on reduced models, it was possible to analyse the behaviour of the structure and to construct a numerical model that factors in the different physical phenomena acting on the converter. The model is developed from a modal decomposition of the tube deformations. The non-linear behaviour of the material is taken into account via hyper-elastic theory and the wave-structure interaction is performed using the linear boundary elements method. Two versions have been developed, one operating in the linear frequency domain and the other in the time domain in order to take non-linear effects into account.

Finally, the simulations provided by the developed model are compared with the measurements carried out in the ocean basin in order to validate the results.
